(Please note that the following information pertains only to the use of Copyrighted materials in a worship/corps program context and not to use in the classroom).
More and more in our meetings, Sunday School classes and youth programs are we finding innovative ways to include video to illustrate a sermon point or topic. Showing the latest movies is also becoming an ever more frequent Youth event.
However, many of us are not aware that prerecorded home videos or DVDs (commonly available in retail or rental stores) are intended for personal, home use only. They generally do not carry licenses for public showings. Any viewing outside the home requires a license granting specific authorization. This is the case for each organization that uses videos- even for nonprofit groups, even if admission is not being charged, and even though the video has been purchased.
The Copyright Act of 1976 gives copyright owners almost total control of the use of their copyrighted works, including the right to show films and videos. By law, prerecorded videos and DVDs are for home use only (and now car use!), unless you have permission to show them in public. Without permission, you may be in violation of the Copyright Act and subject to substantial penalties.
This means that in order to legally show videos in our programs we must either use only videos that have public performance rights or obtain written permission from the producers.
Thankfully, it is here that Christian Video Licensing International comes to the rescue. This is a blanket license similar to our CCLI license. This license is purchased for the Territory by THQ and allows us to use clips of movies in sermons and to show movies to our Youth Groups. It does not cover material recorded off the Television or viewings where tickets are being sold.
It also does not cover all movies. Only those produced by Companies that are a part of this program are covered. You will be interested to know, for example, that the company that produced "The Passion of the Christ" is NOT a part of this program.
