The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, founded by William Booth and his wife, Catherine, in London in 1865, began as the Christian Revival Association. Its name was soon changed to the East London Christian Mission and then again, after the work spread to outside the East End of London, to The Christian Mission.

The name was changed to The Salvation Army in 1878.

On March 10, 1880, Commissioner George Scott Railton and seven young women arrived in America and began operations.
