Leading Voices - JAMES F. WHITE
One of North America’s foremost liturgical scholars, Dr. James F. White is perhaps best known for his dedication to the revitalization of the worship life of the church and his extensive writings on worship, sacraments, and liturgical architecture. Among his 20 books are, An Introduction to Christian Worship, A Brief History of Christian Worship and Protestant Worship: Traditions in Transition, all texts that are frequently assigned in college and seminary courses on worship.
Dr. White’s thorough study of the rites of specific Protestant denominations (as well as of liturgical renewal in the Roman Catholic Church) made a valuable contribution to the study of worship.
A United Methodist minister, Dr. White's academic career, spanning more than four decades, began at Ohio Wesleyan University and continued at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. He was Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame from 1983 until his retirement in December 1999. A frequent visiting professor, Dr. White also taught at Drew University, Emory University, Yale University and The Catholic University of America. As member, and past president of the North American Academy of Liturgy (NAAL), he was also the recipient of the prestigious Berakah award presented by that group in 1983.
