Selecting alternate tunes using the Metrical Index

At the top of each song in the Songbook are suggested tunes to which the song can be song. However, many songs have several more possibilities beyond those listed. To find out what these are we use the Metrical Index.

Below are the procedures for selecting alternate tunes using the Metrical Index:

1. Choose a tune number from the list at the top of the song (205 or 200):

690
Onward, Christian soldiers, 205;
Armageddon, 200
6.5.6.5. D.
1.
Onward, Christian soldiers,
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before!
Christ, the royal Master,
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle
See his banners go.

Onward Christian soldiers,
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before!

2. Find that tune number in the metrical index at the back of the song book.

3. Choose any tune from that list. If there is an “*” next to the number this means that some alterations will be needed: e.g. leaving out the chorus or repeating some of the lines etc.
