Cadet’s Rule

Course Description
This course follows on from Music in The Salvation Army II (MU185b) with a continuing look at the significant role that music plays within The Salvation Army and the skills and knowledge needed to maximize and lead in the use of music in Worship.

Students will further develop their ability to lead corporate singing with practical experience and cement their understanding of the technology used to enhance worship.

The discussion on worship will move to how to effectively plan for worship including the formation and use of the worship committee.




Course Objectives
1. Students will continue to expand their knowledge of the Salvation Army Songbook, Metrical Index, Concordance and Companion to the Songbook.
2. Students will continue their practice in leading corporate singing in both traditional hymn and Praise & Worship genres.
3. Students will continue to look at the skills and qualities necessary for being an effective worship leader.
4. Students will continue to look at the capabilities/possibilities when using multimedia in worship and further develop their understanding of the use of technology in worship.
5. Students will know how to put song sets together and how to ensure continuity in worship.
6. Students will learn how to effectively debrief and evaluate the effectiveness of worship.


Course Requirements

Attendance
Each student is allowed one (1) absence per quarter with three (3) times late constituting an absence. If a student exceeds the allotted number of absences then the final grade will be lowered by a full letter grade. Excused absences are at the discretion of the instructor and only with advanced notice.

Participation
Students are required to attend class with a positive approach to the subject matter and actively participate in the activities presented therein.

Book Response
The students will write a 4 to 6 page response paper to either “To know you more” or Music through the eyes of Faith in which they should:

- Identify the Thesis of the book (purpose for writing).
- Provide their overall response to the book.
- Describe how this book impacts them as a worshipper and leader of worship.
- Identify 2 or 3 chapters that made an impression on them (positively or negatively).
- Identify how this book (or above chapters) will assist them ministry as a Corps Officer.
- Support observations and examples with quotes.

This paper is to have one inch margins, be double spaced and use Times Roman font size 12. Use standard MLA format and include your name, book title and author.

Worship Outlines
The students will put together outlines for two different worship services centered on themes of their choice. For each meeting students should include songs from the Songbook, Scripture and Sermon title and Praise and Worship set that should include:

- 3 or 4 songs that fit the theme (using the Songbook and contemporary songs).
- Appropriate scriptures to use between or during songs.
- A script for any introductions, scriptures or comments to be given during worship.
- Arrangement ideas to be implemented.

Students should lay out the above information in a format that can be given to their praise band members to use as a clear guide to what is to happen during the time of Praise and Worship. When putting this together, students should be sure to consider the direction and flow of the set as far as mood, energy and dynamic level are concerned.

Worship Leading
The Students’ individual effectiveness in leading the congregation in worship will be assessed. Video technology will be used so that more than one occasion can be used in this process. Improvements made may also be taken into consideration.

Worship Journal
Students are to hand in a Worship Journal in which they should comment on the Worship in Chapel, giving particular attention to the occasions that their Worship Team is used and in particular their own individual involvement/contribution.

Students should evaluate the worship, determining whether or not it was ‘successful’ and what improvements could be made.


Course Deadlines
All assignments are to be handed in by Friday, November 10th.

Late assignments will be docked 5% for each day late, up to a maximum deduction of 20%. Assignments not turned in by Tuesday, November 14th will not be accepted and will count for zero points.
