Cadet's Rule
The Salvation Army expects Cadets to conduct themselves, at all times, as a Christian and an Officer-in-training.

Course Description
This course is designed to give the Cadets an understanding of the significant role that music plays within worship and evangelical practices of the Salvation Army. With an appreciation for both the unique music mediums of The Salvation Army and contemporary worship styles and technologies, this course will provide Cadets with the skills and knowledge needed to maximize and lead in the use of music in Worship.
Course Objectives
1. The Cadets will continue to expand their experience of the Songbook of The Salvation Army
2. The Cadets will have continued opportunity to practice the skills acquired in leading corporate singing.
3. The Cadets will discuss how develop and run their Corps' music programs
4. The Cadets will explore the bigger picture of worship and music's role within it.
5. The Cadets will explore the Worship Planning process.
6. The Cadets will explore secular music and its potential effects on the Youth of their Corps.
7. The Cadets will discuss differences in Generational Worship Styles and music in the Emerging 8. Church and how this might impact the future of Salvation Army Music.
9. Cadets will continue to discuss the differences in music/worship styles of the various ethnic groups and cultures that make up Salvation Army congregations.
Student Learning Outcomes Assessment
The above objectives will be assessed using questions in the homework assignments in which the Cadets will demonstrate their understanding and address the implications/applications on their future ministry as Corps Officers of the topics discussed.
Course Requirements
Attendance: Each Cadet is allowed one (1) absence per quarter with three (3) times late constituting an absence. If a Cadet exceeds the allotted number of absences then the final grade will be lowered by a full letter grade. Excused absences are at the discretion of the instructor and only with advanced notice.
Participation: Cadets are required to attend class with a positive approach to the subject matter and actively participate in the activities presented therein.
Homework Assignments: The Cadets will be given a short homework assignment after each class to be completed before the next class. Each assignment will contain questions that relate to either the material discussed in class or portions of the required texts and are designed to help the cadets internalize the information shared and to reflect on the relevance of that information on their future ministry.
Song Leading: The Cadets are to lead corporate singing (hymn or Praise and Worship) on at least two occasions. The Cadet is responsible for notifying the instructor that they will be leading a song so arrangements for assessment can be made. Where possible, more than two assessments can be made and the best 2 grades used.
Music Ministry Paper: Drawing on the topics covered in this course, Cadets should write a 4 to 6 page paper on their vision for the Music Ministry at their corps. Cadets should address in particular what they view as being essential, how they would develop and implement these if absent and how they envisage the music ministry complementing and supporting the overall Worship life of the corps.
Standard MLA format should be used.

Course Deadlines
Homework assignments are due before the next class.
Music Ministry Paper is due Friday, March 14th.
Late assignments will be docked 5% for each day late, up to a maximum deduction of 20%. Assignments not turned in after four days will not be accepted and will count for zero points.
All written assignments should be submitted through turn-it-in.
