Course Description
This course is designed to give the Cadets an understanding of the significant role that music plays within worship and evangelical practices of the Salvation Army. With an appreciation for both the unique music mediums of The Salvation Army and contemporary worship styles and technologies, this course will provide Cadets with the skills and knowledge needed to maximize and lead in the use of music in Worship.
Course Objectives
1. Cadets will explore the role of the Worship Team within worship.
2. Cadets will appreciate the role of each individual (instrument/part) within the Worship Team.
3. Cadets will develop a repertoire of songs that they are very familiar with.
4. Cadets will appreciate the need for rehearsal and understand how to put one together.
5. Cadets will discover how to put worship sets together and how to ensure continuity in worship.
6. Cadets will discuss choosing songs for worship.
7. Cadets will have continued exposure to the Salvation Army Songbook, Metrical Index and Concordance and Companion to the Songbook.
8. Cadets will continue to receive instruction and practice in leading corporate singing.
9. Cadets will be introduced to the skills and qualities necessary for being an effective worship leader.
10. Cadets will continue to discuss the differences in music/worship styles of the various ethnic groups and cultures that make up Salvation Army congregations.
Student Learning Outcomes Assessment
The above objectives will be assessed using questions in the homework assignments in which the Cadets will demonstrate their understanding and address the implications/applications on their future ministry as Corps Officers of the topics discussed.
The Cadets first leading of a contemporary song will be compared to their final (using video tape).
Course Requirements
Attendance: Each Cadet is allowed one (1) absence per quarter with three (3) times late constituting an absence. If a Cadet exceeds the allotted number of absences then the final grade will be lowered by a full letter grade. Excused absences are at the discretion of the instructor and only with advanced notice.
Participation: Cadets are required to attend class with a positive approach to the subject matter and actively participate in the activities presented therein.
Homework Assignments: The Cadets will be given a short homework assignment after each class to be completed before the next class. Each assignment will contain questions that relate to either the material discussed in class or portions of the required texts and are designed to help the cadets internalize the information shared and to reflect on the relevance of that information on their future ministry.
Praise and Worship: Each Cadet must participate in a Praise and Worship group on two occasions. Involvement can include singing, playing, running MediaShout or the sound board. Cadets should submit one page (via email) detailing their involvement and thoughts on how they think the Worship Team did.
Worship 'Sets': The Cadets are to put together two Worship 'sets' centered on themes of their choice. However, in at least one, all the songs used should be God centered, celebrating who God is and what he has done for us, rather than focusing on us and our response to the above. Each set should include:
3 or 4 songs that fit the theme (using the Songbook and contemporary songs).
- Appropriate scriptures to use between or during songs.
- A script for any introductions, scriptures or comments to be given during worship.
- Arrangement ideas to be implemented.
Cadets should lay out the above information in a format that can be given to their praise team members to use as a clear guide to what is to happen during the time of Praise and Worship. When putting this together, Cadets should be sure to consider the direction and flow of the set as far as mood, energy and dynamic level are concerned.
Praise & Worship Leading Final: Each Cadet is to lead a contemporary worship hymn of their choice employing the skills and techniques discussed and practiced during the course.

Course Deadlines
Homework assignments are due before the next class.
Praise and Worship Sets are to be handed in by Friday, March 14th.
Late assignments will be docked 5% for each day late, up to a maximum deduction of 20%. Assignments not turned in after four days will not be accepted and will count for zero points.
All assignments should be submitted through turn-it-in.
The Praise and Worship Leading final will take place during class on Thursday, March 13th.
